At Sea

I recently spent two years as a high school teacher aboard Sørlandet, a ninety-year-old Norwegian tall ship operating as a boarding school at sea, during its first world circumnavigation. 

I also served as Media Coordinator, communicating with shoreside administration and providing blogs and photographs of daily life. 

Later, as Voyage Crew Coordinator of the ship's first integration program, I partnered Norwegian youth with Eritrean and Syrian refugees to foster cross-cultural relationships during the 2017 Tall Ships Races, reporting to the Assistant to the Minister of Immigration.

Brief address given at a political summit in Arendal, Norway on behalf of Mons Sydness, Advisor to the Minister of Immigration, at the end of the government sponsored integration program aboard the sailing ship Sørlandet, in the hopes of bolstering support in the year to come.

Australia—Field Studies Blog

Yes, the crew feasted on the eye candy of biological parks of remarkable natural beauty. Yes, their palettes enjoyed exotic treats and meats (Timtams, crocodile, kangaroo). Yes, they pet creatures that even in their local zoos they’d yet to see, and on their own played didgeridoos. But this was no mere tourist trip to the Great Down Under. In Cairns, students learned, observed and even experienced life as Australians do.

New Caledonia—Field Studies Blog

A high-octane contest of creativity and teamwork, The Sørlandet Scavenger Hunt got a reprieve in Noumea. The morning of their signature field studies, students were broken into groups of four and tasked with retrieving, achieving and answering all items on the day’s roster before their competitors.

Pape’ete may not be the biggest town in the Pacific, but Sørlandet's time there was a busy one. Students said goodbye to the maritime crew with whom they’d sailed from Panama, and welcomed aboard those with whom they had crossed the Atlantic and sailed the Caribbean; a parting of mixed emotions.

Lisbon—Field Studies Blog
